AquaVentus: Cost-efficient energy transition for stable energy prices

The energy transition is not only an ecological goal, but also an economic one. With AquaVentus, we are creating the basis for a cost-efficient transformation of our energy system that ensures stable and affordable energy prices in the long term.

Cost efficiency through offshore wind power and green hydrogen

Offshore wind energy is one of the most economical renewable energy sources. The steady winds on the high seas enable high capacity utilisation of the turbines and thus reduce the costs per kilowatt hour generated. By converting wind power directly into green hydrogen, this form of energy can be used flexibly – for industry, transport and as energy storage.

Why AquaVentus is particularly cost-efficient:

  • Transport infrastructure: The AquaDuctus pipeline as part of the hydrogen core network with combined connection concepts for wind areas offers a favourable alternative, can be implemented more quickly and means less environmental impact than pure transport via submarine cables.
  • Economies of scale through offshore hub: Large-scale production of green hydrogen on the high seas can significantly reduce costs.
  • Technology innovation: Through continuous research and development in line with the AquaVentus ‘triple jump’, we are constantly driving forward more efficient production methods.

Stable energy prices for the future

With the transition to green energy, we need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. With sector coupling through combined connection concepts of pipeline and submarine cable directly at sea, we are ensuring resilient energy prices. AquaVentus is helping to stabilise Europe’s energy supply:

  • Utilising flexibility with hydrogen as energy storage: combined connection concepts allow electricity to be produced when electricity prices are high. When electricity prices are low or even negative, hydrogen is produced cost-effectively. This results in stable energy prices.
  • Predictability through local production: Offshore wind energy and hydrogen production in Europe strengthen security of supply and reduce import costs.
  • Long-term investments: The infrastructure that AquaVentus is building is designed to last for decades and creates a stable basis for future energy supplies.

AquaVentus: Investing in a sustainable future

The energy transition is a major endeavour – but it must remain affordable for the economy and consumers. AquaVentus shows that sustainable energy does not have to be expensive. On the contrary, as combined connection concepts can even save over €30bn. Our initiative creates the conditions for an emission-free energy supply that is both ecologically and economically convincing.
