UK and Germany Move to Advance North Sea Hydrogen Pipeline Projects
Aberdeen, 22 April 2026. Further steps to deepen UK–German energy cooperation are being discussed during a high-level delegation visit to Aberdeen. Around 50 representatives from industry, project development and research have come together for a three-day meeting to explore concrete cooperation projects across the entire hydrogen value chain — from offshore generation and transport to storage and industrial use. The visit, organised by AquaVentus and the Renewable Energy Cluster Hamburg, builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed by AquaVentus and Hydrogen Scotland in September 2025. Plans for an offshore hydrogen pipeline linking the United Kingdom and Germany are becoming increasingly concrete.

Hamburg, January 26, 2026. On the occasion of the third North Sea Summit, AquaVentus is calling for the consistent implementation of political commitments to the integrated use of the North Sea's energy potential. Berlin, January 15 2026. The current draft of the Grid Development Plan (NEP) submitted by the transmission system operators (TSOs) fails to meet the requirements of a modern energy system and jeopardises Germany's industrial base. AquaVentus is calling on the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) to critically examine the draft and to demand substantial additions in the further proceedings, as well as expansions in the offshore sector that go beyond mere electrification.

Berlin, January 02 2026. In the context of the consultation launched by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) on the reform of the Wind Energy at Sea Act (WindSeeG), the hydrogen initiative AquaVentus is calling for clear legislative action to enable a cost-efficient and system-friendly development of offshore wind energy. At the heart of its position is the timely legal establishment of hybrid connection concepts, allowing offshore wind farms to be connected via both electricity cables and hydrogen pipelines.

Berlin, December 3, 2025. At a high-level AquaVentus expert discussion on offshore sector coupling, the almost 60 participants from the energy industry, the German Bundestag and the Federal Network Agency were in clear agreement that combining electricity and hydrogen infrastructure is not only technically possible, but also urgently required from an economic perspective. The study by Frontier Economics shows that combined connections increase the utilization of electricity infrastructure from 52 to 65 percent while requiring lower investment.
