Demonstrator electrolyser — 1 to 5 MW at sea

Demonstrator electrolyser: 1 to 5 MW capacityAdvancing standardisation and the first gigawatt capacitiesTesting the entire offshore value chain

The AquaPrimus project aims to advance offshore hydrogen production and to serve as a development and demonstration platform for research institutions and companies. Technological innovations in offshore hydrogen production are tested and developed further under real conditions. The insights gained contribute to scaling offshore hydrogen production and enable more efficient industrial implementation.

Technologies and learning curves

AquaPrimus enables rapid learning curves in offshore hydrogen production, independently of existing technologies such as wind power or pipeline transport. The focus is on key technologies including seawater treatment, offshore electrolysis, compression, storage and hydrogen use. The project promotes the exchange of knowledge through close cooperation between relevant market players and strengthens the integration of hydrogen into existing and future value chains.

Consortium model

A flexible consortium model allows research and industry to be involved. Industrial consortia get the opportunity to develop technologies for offshore hydrogen production and to carry them into future projects. AquaPrimus serves as a test field for players and consortia preparing for future SEN-1 tenders. It enables regulatory interaction to develop standardised permitting processes and contributes to establishing robust cost and revenue models.

Testing and demonstration

By establishing a test and demonstration environment, key technologies for offshore hydrogen production are developed further. AquaPrimus promotes the market penetration of scalable and cost-efficient hydrogen solutions and creates ideal conditions for research, development and the industrial scaling of offshore hydrogen production.
