Versorgungsbetriebe Helgoland

Municipal utility of Germany's only offshore island

Versorgungsbetriebe Helgoland GmbH is the municipal utility and infrastructure company of the municipality of Helgoland and part of Hansewerk AG. The company secures the island's electricity, heat and drinking water supply, operating a 15 km drinking water network, a 17.5 km district heating network and the local electricity grid on behalf of Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG. As an immediate neighbour of the planned AquaDuctus pipeline and the offshore wind zones in the German North Sea, Helgoland sits literally at the centre of the energy transition at sea.

For AquaVentus the perspective of Versorgungsbetriebe Helgoland is unique: hardly any other member organisation is geographically this close. Helgoland could play a key role as a first landing point or hub for offshore hydrogen, and the utility brings the operational knowledge of an island infrastructure that already demonstrates how a resilient and largely self-sufficient energy supply can work.
