Helgoland belongs to the district of Pinneberg, which is both the smallest and the largest district in Schleswig-Holstein: the smallest in area at 664 square kilometres, yet the most populous with around 317,000 inhabitants.
With around 16,000 companies in industry, trade and services, the district of Pinneberg is one of the economically strongest in the Hamburg metropolitan region.
