Gemeinde Helgoland

A unique North Sea island as a living laboratory for green hydrogen

As an emission-free alternative to oil, green hydrogen is a central element of the energy transition. Helgoland is aiming for 10 gigawatts of production capacity for green hydrogen from offshore wind by 2035, with potentially one million tonnes of green hydrogen a year.

The plans and visualisations presented show that Helgoland will remain a unique natural paradise and will not develop into an industrial island. In its pioneering role, the island serves as a living laboratory for sustainable hydrogen technology.
