Hydrogen eight calls for marine areas for hybrid energy production – Contribution Renewable energies

The German energy industry initiative Hydrogen Eight has called for the swift adaptation of German and European regulations for the combined expansion of wind power and electrolysis in the North Sea. In a position paper, the alliance of leading associations and organizations in the energy industry, which was launched in 2021 and aims to achieve the production of green hydrogen (H2) directly in offshore wind farms at sea, first called for an amendment to the German Wind Energy at Sea Act (WindSeeG). As envisaged in the coalition agreement of the new German government, the WindSeeG must enable combined connection concepts consisting of submarine cables and pipelines for wind power and H2 exports to land. In addition, the area development planning for the outermost German North Sea zones 4 and 5, which will enter the next round in 2026, must immediately define areas that provide for hydrogen and wind power generation in equal measure. These areas should be designated close to the planned H2 underwater pipeline Aquaductus.
